Abstract The clinical importance of heartworm infection in cats has indeed increased in recent years. Dirofilaria immitis infection has been reported worldwide in cats and continues to be regularly diagnosed in endemic areas. The diagnosis can be overlooked easily, especially in Brazil, where there is not a specific feline immunodiagnostic test, forcing the veterinarians to use a test made for the canine host. In 2015, a 10-year-old female neutered cat was diagnosed with D. immitis using an antigen serological test, based on imunocromatography and designed for dogs. The modified Knott test was negative. As the disease progressed, the cat showed clinical signals of respiratory distress, such as dyspnoea and polypnea in addition to prostration and... |

The in vitro model Ostrea edulis hemocyte - Bonamia ostreae is interesting to investigate host-parasite interactions at the cellular level. Indeed, this unicellular parasite infects the flat oyster Ostrea edulis and multiplies within hemocytes, the central effectors of oyster defenses. Apoptosis is a mechanism used by many organisms to eliminate infected cells. In order to study the potential involvement of this mechanism in the oyster response to B. ostreae, in vitro experiments were carried out by exposing hemocytes from the naturally susceptible oyster O. edulis and a resistant oyster species Crassostrea gigas to live and heat-inactivated parasites. Hemocyte apoptotic response was measured using a combination of flow cytometry and microscopy analyses.... |

Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. After its first description in June 1979ı in Brittany, the parasite rapidly spread to all French oyster farming areas and in other European countries through transfers of live molluscs. The parasite has been described in different ecosystems from estuaries to open sea and no clear correlations could he demonstrated between the disease development and environmental parameters like temperature or salinity. The infection can he directly transmitted by cohabitation between infected and non infected oysters. Nevertheless, the parasite life cycle, including its survival outside the host, is not completely... |

Thirty-one captive maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus, Illiger 1815) from 11 Zoos at the State of São Paulo, Brazil, were screened to investigate the presence of parasites and Salmonella infection by parasitological diagnostic methods and fecal selective culture. The most frequent ecto and endoparasites found were Ctenocephalides felis (56.2%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (12.5%), Ancylostoma caninum (45.1%), Strongyloides sp. (29.0%), Uncinaria stenocephala (3.2%), Capillaria sp. (3.2%), Entamoeba sp. (22.9%), Sarcocystis sp. (29.0%), Cryptosporidium sp. (19.3%), Eimeria sp. (19.3%), Giardia sp. (9.6%) and Isospora sp. (3.2%). Four different serotypes of Salmonella were identified in six animals (25%). Only one infected animal showed clinical signs of... |

Blood-feeding terrestrial leeches of the family Haemadipsidae are a notorious part of the invertebrate diversity in Asian and Australian rain forests. All hitherto published records of terrestrial leeches of Borneo belong to the genus Haemadipsa. Here, a second, poorly known haemadipsid genus is reported from Mount Kinabalu and Crocker Range National Park. The individuals were barcoded and compared to sequences available in GenBank. The results show that the genus Tritetrabdella has representatives in the Indochinese and the Sundaic bioregions. All six specimens from Borneo are from a single new Tritetrabdella lineage, T. kinabaluensis spec. nov. Within the Bornean lineage, two groups differing 4-5% in the COI barcoding sequence were identified. Because 1)... |

A new species, Hexamermis paranaense n. sp. (Nematoda, Mermithidae), a parasite of larvae of Diloboderus abderus Sturm, 1826 (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) is described and illustrated. This new species is characterized by amphids small, amphidial opening pocket-shaped, the anterior portion of the vagina muscularized and slightly protruding with a descending branch forming a loop before joining the uterus, and three rows of genital papillae: the ventrolateral divided in two rows with eight papillae in the outer row and with six papillae in the inner one; the ventral row with four pairs and one single preanal papillae, and with two pairs, a triplete, one pair, a single and one pair postanal papillae. |

ABSTRACT During the present study, the host-parasite relationship between mosquitoes and parasitic mites was investigated. The 8954 individuals of male and female mosquitoes belonging to 26 genera: seven each of Aedes and Culex, six of Anopheles and one each of Toxorhynchites, Coquillettidia and Uranotaenia were collected from 200 sites. The male and female mosquitoes were collected from the State of Uttar Pradesh, located at 26.8500° N, 80.9100° E in North India by deploying Carbon dioxide-baited and gravid traps. The intensity of mite's infection, type and number of mites attached to mosquitoes, mite's preference for body parts and host sexes were the parameters used to determine host-parasite relationship. Eight species of mites: Arrenurus acuminatus,... |

This study aimed to evaluate the infection by the Austrodiplostomum compactum metacercariae in fishes from the Nova Avanhandava Reservoir, low Tietê river, São Paulo State, Brazil. The parasites were collected from eye (aqueous and vitreous humor), fixed in AFA solution and stained with carmine. The morphometric analysis was performed using a computerized system for analysis of images QWin Lite 2.5 (Leica). Prevalence, mean intensity of infection and abundance of infected fish were calculated. Of the 22 species of fish registered, five were infected by metacercariae: Hoplias malabaricus, Metynnis maculatus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Satanoperca pappaterra and Schizodon nasutus. Of the 627 fish evaluated, 34% were infected. A higher prevalence was... |

Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent mediator with diverse roles in regulating cellular functions and signaling pathways. The NO synthase (NOS) enzyme family consists of three major isoforms, which convey variety of messages between cells, including signals for vasorelaxation, neurotransmission and cytotoxicity. This family of enzymes are generally classified as neuronal NOS (nNOS), endothelial NOS (eNOS) and inducible NOS (iNOS). Increased levels of NO are induced from iNOS during infection; while eNOS and nNOS may be produced at the baseline in normal conditions. An association of some key cytokines appears to be essential for NOS gene regulation in the immunity of infections. Accumulating evidence indicates that parasitic diseases are commonly associated with... |

The history of French oyster culture shows very well how fragile this farming is to stock overexploitation and diseases. The production of flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, fell dramatically after the appearance of two parasitic diseases: arteiliosis and bonamiosis. The curative means against bonamiosis (Bonamia ostreae) are restricted and imply a good knowledge of the parasite's life cycle and of its interaction with its host. Studying the expression of the parasite's and the host's genes during the infection seems essential in providing new adapted measures in order to maintain, if not relaunch the flat oyster culture. In this context, this thesis aims to understand the flat oyster-parasite interactions, and especially, the molecular basis of the resistance to... |
